Notes from the President-Sept 1 Edition

Labor Day Weekend – typically marks the end of the season, however, for those who take advantage during September and October many times get bonus time enjoying all the water sport activities. This year was no different! Did you know that the National holiday was designated by President Grover Cleveland on June 28, 1894, following many states in prior years creating their own holiday to celebrate the American Worker. The first celebration was in September 1882 when 10,000 NYC workers marched in the parade organized by the Central Labor Union. Over the decades labor laws started to develop with protection against child labor and unsafe – unfair labor practices.

Stafford Field – we continue the preparation for this falls over seed as part of the restoration project to bring back native flowering vegetation for butterflies and support to events like Lot-A-Smoke (October 10-11). The fall application of herbicide was sprayed in preparation for the over seed.

Gas Dock Update – as noted in my last article we made upgrades to the gas docks and since then added a Wave Runner ramp to support safer fueling. A “How to Use Ramp” video was provided by Mid-Lakes Marine (aka Spencer Brachman), our installer, and you can find it on our website.

Road Projects – The West Shore roads project minus the completion of the Lower Water Crossing is complete. AllPro Asphalt out of Blue Springs, MO was the contractor this year. The plan is still to pave between Gates 3 & 4 in connection with the Low Water Crossing project, which should be completed sometime in October.
Here is the new shoulder on the uphill curve at Lake Shore Drive and Thompson Road intersection. The new shoulder and drainage ditch. The refurbishing project of the two 60” road culverts that feed into Buffalo Cove at the bottom of the hill are still planned for this year. Thank you to Jerry and Janet Frazier for their support in allowing us to encroach on their property to make this improvement!

Next year all our focus will shift to the North Shore project where we will again replace any remaining culverts and prepare the ditch lines for resurfacing. As noted before, with the completion of our three-year project to resurface roads, we will focus in 2027 on funding our Roads Reserve Fund for the next resurfacing effort. We also will have major culvert replacements at the end of Sunrise and Sunset Bays to complete along with any other road improvements that are needed going forward.
