3/9/22 – Association News

The Annual Meeting of Lake Lotawana Association, Inc. will be held on March 8, 2022, at 7:30 pm at the Church of Jesus Christ located at Gate 2. Please plan on attending to learn of the financial and operational results for 2021, as well as the goals for 2022. Several people inquired at the November meeting about the financial aspects of the Association, rather than budget questions. This March meeting will contain the financial results for both the Association and the Association’s ownership of the Marina 27 facility. We hope to see you there!

As many of you know we experienced an unusually large snow fall on February 17th; one like we had not seen in several years. One result of that large amount of snowfall is our crew pushing large amounts of snow from the roadways and onto the sides of the road, which of course includes many members’ driveways. While we are aware of the natural consequence of snow plowing, it is simply not feasible, both from a time and money standpoint, to plow in a “special manner” to keep the snow off of driveways. Scott Johnson, our compliance officer, did respond to a request that a member was having difficulty getting in and out of her driveway. He cleared her drive and of course we thank him very much for his efforts. It is obvious, however, that we cannot respond to each such request from our members. It is also not desirable after the roads are plowed and treated to have members push snow from their driveways back onto the street. Not only is this counter-productive to clearing our private street system, but it also creates an unintended danger to traffic since those areas will likely create unexpected patches of snow and possible ice.  All of us would appreciate it if when you clear your driveway you simply keep the snow that you are removing off the roadway. Thank you so much for your cooperation.

If you have not been following the Dollar General – City of Blue Springs development located on the Southeast corner of Colbern and 7 Highway, I will attempt to provide a condensed update as to its status. A hearing was held by the City of Blue Springs on February 22nd. The City Mayor announced at the very beginning of the meeting that no public testimony would be allowed regarding this matter as it was on the agenda only as a formality for consideration and as it turns out ultimate approval. At that point and soon thereafter a majority of the 40-50 Lake Lotawana people in attendance left the meeting. What the Mayor did not share with these people was the fact that open comments would be allowed at the end of the meeting. Luckily about 10 of us stayed and 4 of us were allowed to voice our concerns and opposition to the development. I believe the efforts were worthwhile even though by the time we were allowed to speak the final plat of the development had been approved. Rest assured we will continue to monitor the progress of the permitting and construction of the project, keeping an eye towards taking whatever action is necessary to best protect our lake from adverse actions and inactions. We appreciate all of those who attended the meeting and despite many leaving early, it is my opinion the Council took note of the large group of people that were in attendance, most assuredly recognizing that we were there to oppose the development.

We also wish to extend a reminder to all members that if you are planning any outside construction projects involving your own real property, pathways, parkways or docks, please contact the office to determine what, if any, construction permits, fees and/or approvals are necessary.

The Association is still looking to hire employees to bolster its workforce. We have openings for several general laborers, as well as someone who possesses the skill and knowledge to operate heavy equipment. If you know anyone who might be interested, please have her or him contact the office for more details.

We are available at 816.578.4272 if we can help answer any questions, concerns or perhaps resolve a problem. Please also feel free to call me directly with any concerns or comments at 913.305.7181 or email me at [email protected]. Safety first! Harold
