5/23/18 – Association News

By the time you read this column we will have a successful contract bidder for the work on the dam bridge road and spillway repairs.  We anticipate work starting immediately after the Memorial Day weekend.  We can’t start work until after the school buses are through for the season.  At some point, we will need to close the road over the dam for about two weeks.  We’ll keep everyone informed via Facebook once the time frame is firmed up, so stay tuned.  Contrary to rumors floating about, we have no intention of drastically lowering the Lake unless we absolutely have to in order to keep the lower end of the spillway dry enough to work.  This would be “normal” summer lake levels, only.  Since the work is primarily downstream, we won’t be lowering it like we did 25 years ago.

We have been getting both positive and negative comments regarding the Association building a harbor in the back of Sunrise Bay.  The Board of Directors should have a plan to vote on at the June meeting.  Any concerned members are welcome to attend and comment on the project.  The meeting will take place Tuesday night, June 12th in the basement of the Lake Lotawana Community United Methodist Church at Gate 1.

I have been hearing from concerned members about speeding around the Lake roads.  This includes cars, golf carts and even bicycles.  Our roads have a lot of curves and hills and can be quite dangerous.  The kids are out of school and we’re still crack-filling the road.  I’ve heard of a few near misses as folks come in Gate 1 and pop over the hill at too high a speed near the Marina and boat ramp.  With our anticipated closing of that road and the construction vehicles present, a higher degree of caution would be appropriate.  Please drive carefully.

Finally, it’s not too early to be thinking about the Fourth of July Fireworks Show.  We will be sending out the letters requesting donations soon.  The cost of the show is not taken from the operating budget, so we rely on the kind generosity of our members to put it on.  The more we collect, the more spectacular the show.  If you’ve already donated, thank you.  If you haven’t, there is still plenty of time to do so.
